WHat is Discernment Counseling?

Discernment Counseling: Clarity for Your Relationship’s Future

Discernment counseling is a short-term, structured approach designed for couples who are uncertain about whether to continue their relationship or separate. Unlike traditional couples therapy, which focuses on improving the relationship, discernment counseling helps partners gain clarity and confidence in their decision about the future of their relationship.

This process typically lasts between 3 to 6 sessions and includes both joint sessions as a couple and individual sessions with the counselor. The goal is not to solve ongoing relationship problems but to understand what has happened, explore options, and decide on a path forward—whether that means working toward reconciliation or moving toward separation with greater understanding and respect.

Discernment counseling is especially beneficial when one partner is leaning toward ending the relationship while the other wants to repair it. The counselor serves as a neutral guide, helping each person examine their concerns, contributions to the relationship dynamics, and potential paths forward.

If you and your partner are at a crossroads, discernment counseling provides a structured space to explore your options with clarity, honesty, and compassion—so you can make a decision with confidence.
